The Law of Attraction, Science, and a Challenge to Rhonda Byrne

by Stephanie Brail

I am a mystic, but I am also a science geek. I used to teach science to elementary school students. I believe in miracles, but I believe these miracles occur within the framework of a very real world that is subject to certain laws of physics. Science is very complicated, and you cannot reduce the way the universe operates down to one simple formula.

Yet, many are accepting the idea that the so-called Law of Attraction is the way the universe works, or, in the least, the way people’s lives work. This idea, now put forth into the mainstream by The Secret, has been called “scientific” by many of its adherents. Yet, this label is not only misleading but downright false.

The basic idea behind the Law of Attraction is “like attracts like.” Adherents point to science as the reason this is true, citing magnets or quantum physics as “proof.” Actually, science does not say “like attracts like” whatsoever. In the most simplest of scientific explanations, the real truth is “opposites attract.”

Explained simply: A positively charged particle will attract a negatively charged particle and vice versa. Two positively charged particles will repel one another.

This is how magnets really work. This is how electricity works.

So right away, we see how science does not prove the Law of Attraction; in fact, science can be said to completely negate the Law of Attraction.

Yet, we’re not really talking particles here, are we? The Law of Attraction is dealing with human life and interactions, so what we’re really looking at is apples and oranges.

So let’s just step back and look at the concept that one simple law can explain everything that happens. I’ve seen, over and over again, people trying to justify the “truth” of the Law of Attraction by stating that universe is simple and runs by very simple laws. So, the logic goes, people’s lives must be just as simple.

Are the laws of the universe really that simple? Can they be reduced to one simple statement? In fact, when you study science at all, you realize that the universe functions smoothly not because of one reductionist law, but because of a complex series of forces and opposing forces that create a certain amount of equilibrium that allows for the creation of life. (Still, over time, this equilibrium will disintegrate, as entropy and energy dispersal breaks down the fabric of the universe as we know it.)

For example, if the only law of the universe was the law of gravity (and no other forces were opposing gravity), then everything would just stick to everything else and there would be no motion, no movement, no life.

The conflicting forces of the universe create a dynamic interplay that allows for the complex interactions that occur in the natural world. Inertia, for example, could keep that baseball you’ve thrown into the air moving on its trajectory for all of eternity, but it is gravity that ultimately pulls the ball down out of the sky. Inertia, however, is what helps the ball fly in the first place. It’s all interrelated.

It is thus scientific nonsense to suggest that one simple law such as the Law of Attraction is solely responsible for all interactions between humans. Is it possible that “attraction” can and does affect human interactions? Of course. But there are also other opposing forces that temper and mold “attraction” to create a complex system just like the one that operates in our natural world.

What then, of the idea that thoughts create our reality? Let’s give this the mystical benefit of the doubt. Perhaps it is possible that our thoughts have some organizing effect. Yet, those thoughts are also interacting with other thoughts and forces. What determines what will win out? The thought? Or the basic laws of the universe? Is the power of a thought more powerful than scientific law? Is it more powerful than gravity? Care to try that out by jumping off a tall building and believing you can fly?

Thus, when Law of Attraction proponents claim it is “scientific,” they are showing a poor understanding of science.

The true irony, of course, is that the people behind The Secret want you to believe the science “proves” their claims, yet, they are more than willing to dismiss science when it is inconvenient for them.

In a most egregious example, Rhonda Byrne, author of the book The Secret, claims that overeating will not make you gain weight. She writes:

“The most common thought that people hold, and I held it too, is that food was responsible for my weight gain. That is a belief that does not serve you, and in my mind now it is complete balderdash! Food is not responsible for putting on weight. It is your thought that food is responsible for putting on weight that actually has food put on weight. Remember, thoughts are primary cause of everything, and the rest is effects from those thoughts. Think perfect thoughts and the result must be perfect weight.”

This flies in the face of every study that has ever been done on the cause of obesity. It flies in the face of biology. It flies in the face of common sense.

And yet, when you look at Rhonda Byrne, she has aged. Isn’t it her belief about aging that makes her age? C’mon, Rhonda, make yourself younger already!

But it’s no surprise that Rhonda can’t take the wrinkles off her face. And you won’t see Rhonda Byrne flying around in the sky like Superman anytime soon. So one has to ask: Why isn’t she? If thoughts truly are the cause of everything, then why isn’t she defying gravity and wowing us with her mental prowess as a high-flying superhero?

So thoughts affect your metabolism, but not your aging or your flying ability? Hm.

Well, let’s give Rhonda the benefit of the doubt here. Maybe she can affect her metabolism, like a seasoned yogi on a mountaintop.

If this is the case, prove it. Here’s the way to do it scientifically. It’s called the “Supersize Me” Challenge, inspired by the documentary of the same name. So I challenge Rhonda Byrne:

Go overeat at McDonald’s every day for three months. We’ll monitor your health and fitness before, during and after. You must eat nothing but McDonald’s, and not just the salads but the hamburgers too. You must eat until you are stuffed and then some. And we’re going to follow you into the bathroom to make sure you aren’t purging yourself of the food. Finally, you cannot exercise during this time.

If, after three months, you show absolutely no weight gain or adverse health effects, then, maybe then, you will have shown some scientific evidence that what you say is true.

But Rhonda, as we can guess, probably won’t take up this challenge. There is always some sort of excuse or modifier put on these challenges. And that should be your first clue that the “truth” that they espouse isn’t so cut and dry after all.

We in America have been suffering from poor quality science education for decades. As our mystics continue to dilute the discourse with false science, we are in danger of creating an ignorant populace that bases decisions on superstition instead of critical thinking.

I am a believer in the mystical. But I don’t think mysticism or spirituality should conflict with science. The two, in fact, should support each other. True spirituality will not conflict with science whatsoever, but see science as evidence of the beautiful intelligent consciousness underneath it all.

I Admire Your Courage

Stephanie,

So many people love The Secret and I've noticed that whenever I say anything against it I'm met with a cold stare or silence. It got to the point that I decided to stop saying anything at all, but seeing your blog today has renewed my resolve to speak up. Your points are ones I had not even considered. I've only seen the movie once and felt that it was a lot of information to absorb in one sitting. I was frankly a little disapponted that it was not a movie with a story plot like The Celestine Prophecy. Being a writer like you I think showing people instead of telling them would have had a much stronger impact. I'm currently enrolled in the University of Metaphysics. The founder, Dr. Paul Leon Masters, had two lectures regarding The Secret. One of his objections was that one person in the movie stated that all a person needs to do is tell the Universe (or God) what he/she wants like ordering from a catalogue. Dr. Masters said that it is God who tells us what our purpose is, not the other way around. I think this explains why so many people are miserable. I know this to be true because of my recent experience. For 25 years I tried to leave the secretarial field which I hated. I joined MLMs and tried other business ventures but none of them worked out. Nothing changed for me until I started meditating. Meditation allowed me to go inside and connect with God/Spirit within which directed me to take a healing course. I'm now training to become an energy healer, something that had never occurred to me. It was God who guided me. I want to help others to learn to go inside and ask God within for guidance. That to me is the real "Secret."

You have great web sites! I wish you continued success and happiness!

Steph,

I assummed "feelgoodgirl" was a porn spam site when I saw the registration over at LATOC but obviously it's not. Anyhoow, I've written a bit on "The Secret" before, might be of interest

It sort of reminds me of what corporations would do in the third world to the natives who happened to be sitting on a lot of oil, gold, opium, whatever. They'd let the well-intentioned but out-to-lunch and self-serving missionaries in to spread a new religion. So pretty soon you got 25% of the tribe visualizing (praying) to the new "god" instead of participating in the tribal activites. This divides the tribe, makes it easier to harvest their wealth. In the case of Americans it's going to be easier to harvest what little capital they have left once 25% or so believe this crap.

I must have been attracted

I must have been attracted here? I've spent the last few months educating myself in LOA, the Secret, Science of getting rich and the book I love best Think and Grow Rich, The latter being the only true guide of all that explains only hard work and persistance are the key to success. After agonising with faith for about a month now, as I am a devout atheist(and now an active athiest), I have become comfortable with belief in myself (which wavers consistantly but I get a grip real quickly). I must admit that the Secret gave me the kick in the arse I needed, to develop self confidence, but I don't actually believe that the universe is awaiting my orders to manifest. I now understand that I'm responsible for making my dreams come true, and I am developing the character to see that dream through. Love your site....Tracey

can you give us advisses?

hi tracy!
i read your comment. you've said that you know about the law of attraction. see my friends and i have just started a project about the law of attraction. so what i first need is to know that does it really work...????or not????
we'll be so happy if you help us a little couse me myself DO believe in that law...and it really worked for me...but i'm a little iger to know thw oposite side of the thout"what we think will come true"!
i'll be so happy if you help me out couse i'm really trying to atract all the help about this!:D

"What we think will come true?"

Hi Sheby,

If everything I thought had come true I would alternatively be dead or living with Johnny Depp in France!

No, everything you think does not come true.

Please read my article on how the tools used in the Law of Attraction can work, but this does not prove that the Law of Attraction is true:

http://feelgoodgirl.com/node/81

Wow.

Wow. Stephanie - you, like many other skeptics, are COMPLETELY missing the point. I'm not wasting my time to challenge every bit of your article; I had to notice the text in bold, however =). Regarding the "Supersize Me" challenge:
Do you really think that one of Rhonda Byrne's biggest goals in life is to eat @ McD's and not get fat? Obviously it isn't, and therefore she will never truly believe that she can actually pull off something like that, and that is why she would never take a silly challenge like that.

Overall, you're coming from a very negative and skeptical perspective, and in accordance with the same Law that you're criticizing, the Universe gives you things you're looking for - little bits of information that seem to undermine the validity of the Law of Attraction.

My suggestion would be to review the movie, read some books and articles, and, finally, be honest with yourself and really try out the idea for yourself. You have to go into it with an open mind, of course.

You're not helping out anyone, and definitely not yourself, by spreading misleading information over the internet. But don't give up, try again.

Wow yourself.

"Do you really think that one of Rhonda Byrne's biggest goals in life is to eat @ McD's and not get fat? Obviously it isn't, and therefore she will never truly believe that she can actually pull off something like that, and that is why she would never take a silly challenge like that."

She wouldn't take the challenge because she knows she would fail. But of course, there's always some sort of rationalizing "out" for the Law of Attraction people whenever they are challenged.

"Overall, you're coming from a very negative and skeptical perspective, and in accordance with the same Law that you're criticizing, the Universe gives you things you're looking for - little bits of information that seem to undermine the validity of the Law of Attraction."

You mean little bits and pieces of information from something like hard science? Yeah, that's a horrible world I live in, where I believe in science over a simplistic self-help book.

"You have to go into it with an open mind, of course."

Boy, I have such a closed mind, being an energy healer and all that. But it's not surprising you say that. If I disagree with you, it's only because I have a "closed mind" and not because I have good reason to disagree.

"You're not helping out anyone, and definitely not yourself, by spreading misleading information over the internet. But don't give up, try again."

In my view, Rhonda Byrne is not helping anyone by spreading misleading information via her book and DVD. And if I can shine a light on the absurdity for some folks, I am more than happy to.

Not everyone resonates with The Secret. We all have our own paths and ways of getting where we're going. While you might not find what I say helpful, others apparently do (read some of the other comments I have received).

RE: the secret

Hey Stephanie

I read all the comments on this forum. I sort of brushed it off and looked at another site then found myself coming back; I really wanted to say something.

Stephanie I'm a very firm believer in the law of attraction. Long before 'the secret' came into the public limelight I held an indepth fascination with 'the emerald tablets' which is the basis of the secret. Indeed if you asked asked someone before 'the secret' came out what the law of attraction was, I doubt they'd give you a response.

I'm not going to dispute you Stephanie. We are all entitled to our own opinions and you do present some very good facts.
The only thing I want to say is, the secret - whether it works or not - has brought so much to so many people around the world. It preaches love and truth and positive thinking; and the only thing Rhonda Byrnes asks for is the cost of the book or the dvd or the audiotape - and yet I personally know of 5 places in my city where I can get a copy of each for free anyway.
Is it really a bad thing, Stephanie? When people are thinking positive and taking in messages of love and truth and hearing that they are special and that they can be all they can be?
Please don't criticise 'the secret' for this - at the end of the day, science will never get millions of people all around the planet to feel good about themselves. That is something that 'the secret' holds the record for.

That's all I have to say... except for one thing. Stephanie - disregarding science - why not take a leap of faith and watch the secret again and see what millions of other people see when they watch it? :)

To me the secret isn't about 'manifesting money or riches' as I admit, many people would see. To me, the secret is feeling good about my place in the universe.

Where's the love?

You say "It preaches love and truth and positive thinking;"

I don't see the love and truth in The Secret at all. What I see in The Secret is "gimme gimme gimme." It's not about loving other people whatsoever. The Secret (and the Law of Attraction) actively preaches to people that you should NOT help others, because others are "attracting" their pain and misery to them so just "allow" them to do that.

Where on earth is there any message in The Secret about real, unconditional love?

It's all about visioning a new car or a necklace around your neck. It's about selfishness and materialism.

My version of a film about love and truth would have people visioning world peace and showing people banding together to end poverty. Not some cheesy film that ironically shows images of happy third world people while teaching you how to manifest your mansion.

secret

Jesus said in his time, I come not to save the righteous, but the sinners...

The secret isn't for those like you, already functioning from a higher level of consciousness - it is for those entrenched in ego based worldly things. How else do you awaken the world, not with your vision of the video, nobody in bondage to their ego would sit and watch all that hippie do-good, love - love - love stuff.

Rhonda accomplished something you cannot, she's awakened huge ##'s of people around the globe, heck, she alone could be responsible for the next shift in consciousness.

How many saviors does it take to change the world (not scientists) JUST ONE.

What's Your Definition of Awake?

If your definition of awake is "working to manifest a brand new red convertible," then I guess you are right, Rhonda Byrne did "wake up" a lot of people.

My feeling, however, is that if you are using your so-called spirituality for the sole purpose of manifesting material wealth for yourself, and nothing more, you are not awake at all. You are still very much asleep.

I am also not so cynical as to assume that people need shiny red cars flashed in front of them in order to be inspired. A heck of a lot of us actually do find love and peace to be much more compelling.

At any rate, if there is any woman alive right now who deserves the accolades of waking up huge numbers of people, it's not Rhonda Byrne, but Bryon Katie. And you tell me, who looks happier to you? You can see the light in Katie's eyes.

The Last Days

2 Timothy chapter 3:1-5 says, "But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come; for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!" You mention Ronda Brynes as the savior but I've yet to see anything change other than people using the secret for selfish gain.

What healing work?

Hi Stephanie,

I found this thread interesting indeed!
What healing work do you do? and Do you have a website?

Reiki Energy Healing

Penny, I do Reiki and other forms of energy healing (see the "Feel Good Services" on the left.)

Stephanie - your article is

Stephanie - your article is one of the most well written and fairly given conversations about The Secret that I've seen. I also am both an elementary science teacher and a self-described mystic, but usually all I can express about this subject is "ARRGH!!!!" Its so maddening to have people preach focus on the individual's desire for physical wealth as some kind of spiritual expression. And to claim that its based in science is just horrible. Science isn't just "the truth," everyone. Science is a specific set of guidelines and practices that human beings use to understand the world around them. Science doesn't equal absolute truth. But the Secret would have us believe that it is absolute truth because it is "science."

Kudos!

Great job, Stephanie! Your post provided what I was looking for, examples of why LOA isn't factual scientifically.

I'm sure that, for everyone that has a glowing testimony to The Secret, there are plenty of others that have dealt with horrible loss, heartache, and other bad things in spite of practicing positive thinking. Maybe they just don't come forward out of fear of ridicule? I've noticed that many among The Secret's fanbase are very close-minded when it comes to people that have "failed".

When you really sit back & look at it rationally, the beliefs behind The Secret aren't any different from those of certain Pentecostal/charismatic/Word of Faith circles. Ever heard of diabetics who died because they refused to take insulin, thinking it went against faith to do so? I don't see any difference between that and those who employ too much "thinking" and not enough 'doing". If you want better health, treat yourself better with appropriate diet, exercise & medication. Hate your job? Search for a new one. Want a better income? Map out a definite plan, stick to it, and live within your means.

For those who claim that LOA's critics don't truly understand it, why don't you find out what our issues are instead of assuming what they are? Is it fear that LOA has been disproven? We don't have absolute control over everything in our lives, and we need to accept this, for better or worse. It's part of being human. I think LOA serves mainly to provide people who can't accept this with an "escape merchanism" of sorts. I think for some people it's easier to think that bad things happen because of bad thoughts rather than accept that they're due to outside circumstances.

I hope that more people will come to realize how wrongful and damaging belief in LOA can be.

It's interesting how

It's interesting how passionate people get about this. I noticed how those who disagree seem condescending, while those who do agree seem more mature in handling the debate... (just an observation)...
Ironically, there is currently a quote on the side of this sreen under 'feelosophy', stating:

DO NOT WASTE YOURSELF IN REJECTION, NOR BARK AGAINST THE BAD, BUT CHANT THE BEAUTY OF THE GOOD.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you dont agree with something, thats fine, natural and expected. However, preaching ANTI- this or that spreads negativity to those who have their own natural opinions. By making someone stumble on their own PERSONAL path to absolute truth, you are single-handedly aiding in their fall.

Are you trying to help others with disagreement, mocking words, and sarcasim? If you truly want to spread the truth, you would do so in an effective manner. A positive manner.

I do not fully believe in The Secret... I am neither for nor against. But, remember what Einstein said when he described the polaraties of science and faith as coinhabitants of the same truth.

Ironic... :-)

The above statement of yours, criticizing people for being critical, is highly ironic. :-)

As for this statement: "By making someone stumble on their own PERSONAL path to absolute truth, you are single-handedly aiding in their fall."

That's giving a lot of power to another person's opinion. I don't think it's helping people to fall when you say "wake up and stop focusing on the material."

Thankfully, Oprah has moved on from The Secret and is now promoting Eckhart Tolle, who gives us a much more soul-affirming, anti-materialistic message. The Secret is now old news. Hurrah for that!

Maybe the truth is in the

Maybe the truth is in the middel...

if opposites attract, well be the 2 poles together

if you accept everything, then you accept yourself too which will give you power to actually push away bad stuff, which will not make you a saint in other peoples eyes, but will attract anyway

a saint needs bad stuff
bad stuff needs a saint

its the cross no...be the 2 poles together, be control, be random, be a hero, be bad, get what you want and enjoy both the positives ( you want) and the negatives (you don`t want) about it etc etc,

its not about being one pole, its being in the middle

the work is one pole, the secret is the other one
non ego is one, ego is the other one

dont throw out the ego
dont throw out the source

god is in the middle, by being both, by loving both
love is acceptence, nothing more, because it feels so good
